A Pardon for a Sin
For women in Costa Rica, having an abortion could place them in excommunication from the Catholic Church. Such an act is considered “a break from the way of the Lord” and is strongly looked down upon in this dominantly Catholic culture. Just like in the U.S. abortion in Costa Rica is also an apparently sticky issue. The difference is that abortions are strictly prohibited in Costa Rica, and are only allowed if the woman is in danger. However, this has not stopped the estimated 27,000 women from having one performed illegally each year.
For the year 2009, things will be different. For the upcoming weeks of Lent and Easter, 300 priests have been given the go ahead to pardon anyone who has had an abortion, as well as anyone involved in the procedure, such as doctors, nurses, family members and friends. The pardoning period will begin February 25, and end April 29. Although this is not the first time this has been done during the Holy period of Easter and Lent, it is however, the first time is has been told to the public.
The people of Costa Rica hope that by having these women receive the pardon and reconciliation of God, the foundation of the church will be stronger.
Many Costa Rican women seeking an abortion will find themselves at clinics, taking illegal abortion pills, and have even had dangerous operations done by boat across international waters. The country also has a high rate of teenage pregnancy, and it is a government priority to keep these girls in school.
As an ending to this topic, I would like to add that what these women go through sounds terrifying. Although this procedure is not encouraged, it’s still a medical process and should be treated as such in all situations. First of all, no one should have to hop a boat to carry out a decision that they feel is right. Not only is that saddening, but it’s unsanitary! Carrying feelings of guilt for not only yourself, but for your Church and God as well is a tough hurdle to jump. Although everyone has their own opinions on the definition of right and wrong, it’s things like this that make me all the more happy to live in a country where I really do have a choice in all aspects of life.
Sometimes shit happens and I’d rather not have to hide it.
